#394: Paldo Hwa Cup Noodle Soup Hot & Spicy Flavor

So today is the day of the supposed rapture, predicted by a fellow in Oakland, CA. He’s disappeared but The Ramen Rater hasn’t! So let’s check out these noodles from Korea!

One packet. Looks good so far…

Nice looking veggies and ample reddish seasoning… Agreeable…

Click image to enlarge. I added a single fried egg. So yeah this stuff was tasty! The veggies were good and hydrated nicely – in fact they reminded me of the bell pepper one would find on a Totino’s Party Pizza you’d find in the frozen section. The noodles were decent and the broth had a decent heat and richness. Good stuff! 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. Find it here.

So here’s perhaps the last or maybe next to last of the Paldo Bowl Noodle Soup line. These have been really good!

Gomtang? Hmm… I reviewed a Paldo noodle a long long time ago called Gomtang – here is the review. In the review, I mention how it tastes beefy… Hmm…

Very light seasoning – again looking identical in the Gomtang review. The veggies are abundant, however!

Click image to enlarge. Two fried eggs were added. This stuff is excellent – no wonder the little artificial flavor cow is smiling! Noodles were like chicken noodle soup noodles which is funny as I don’t come across that often and the last review I did had this kind of noodle too. The broth was tasty – a little salty though, and the veggies were everywhere. Some good stuff. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. Get it here.

#461: Samyang Sutah Ramen Hot & Spicy Beef Flavor

Been meaning to try and review this one for a while and today seems like a good day to do it. I’m a little confused about this one; I looked up Sutah and couldn’t find anything about the word on Google or Wikipedia… Found plenty of Korean BBQ restaurant links but nothing saying what Sutah might mean. Hmm. Well, let’s get to it.

So two packets. This is pretty much the deal with packaged ramen by Paldo and Samyang when in comes in a form like this. Usually they have the same colors too… Hmm… Veggies on left, soup base on right.

There’s the powder on the left and veggies on the right. A lot of both, that’s for certain.

I’m adding two eggs while the noodles cook – I even included a video here.

Click image to enlarge. Here’s the finished product. The noodles are hearty – lots of them and nice and thick. The broth has a nice color and hearty with an angry and fiercely happy burn to it. The vegetables are perfectly ample although a couple pieces never re-hydrated well enough, even at the bottom of the bowl… Hmm. All in all, a good breakfast – I give it 3.5 out of 5.0 stars.

Older Samyang commercial.

#468: Paldo Snack Noodle Soup Slightly Hot Flavor

Snack noodle? What’s that? What flavor is it? Slightly hot flavor? Is that like medium? Or is that mild? I swear I got this quite recently – and it expires that soon? Hmm – weird! We shall see as we delve into a bag of Paldo Snack Ramen Slightly Hot Flavor.

A single packet – kind of weird since it mentions placing the soup base and vegetable mix in… Two packets in one perhaps?

Not easily seen, however there’s a good amount of veggies in with the angry powder.

Click image to enlarge. With two fried eggs (soft yolk), a slice of oven roasted turkey breast and a dash of pepper.  So I would say the broth is a bit more than slightly hot; more like medium hot. The noodles were great – chewy and plentiful. The eggs and turkey really brought it together for a nice breakfast this morning. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars.

Never been able to find any ‘official’ Paldo commercials, but here’s one on Korean culture.

#512: Paldo Big Bowl Noodle Authentic! Hot & Spicy Instant Noodle With Soup Base

$

Hey it’s the 600yj post! That’s overall – not just reviews obviously. Okay so this is one really big bowl. It’s about the size of a 45 RPM record! About as deep as a regular bowl noodle. Been waiting for the right day for this one – I’m sick and my nose is clogged and sore throat, aches and pains, etcetera. This should do the trick – hot and spicy Korean noodles!

Powder on the left, veggies on the right. I liked how it said ‘other’ on the little recycling logo.

Holy crap that’s quite a bit of veggie action there! Awesome! The powder looks like it’ll be spicy – just what I need…

Click image to enlarge. Added a couple eggs. Spicy was what I wanted, spicy is what I got! Awesome! The noodles aren’t the finest ever, but they’re ample and that’s what I needed. The veggies were certainly enjoyable – nice amount of those. Finally the broth was nice and spicy and I actually feel better beccause of it. Kind of like a spicy vegetable soup I enjoyed thoroughly. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. Get it here.

#568: Paldo Gomtang Noodles Beef Flavor With Vegetable

Gomtang? Sounds pretty bizarre. I wonder what it means…

I found a little info on Wikipedia about this stuff:

Guk is largely categorized into four groups of soups, such as malgeun jangguk (맑은 장국), gomguk (곰국), tojangguk (토장국), and naengguk (냉국). Malgeun jangguk literally means “clear (malgeun, 맑은) soup (guk, 국) seasoned with a condiment (jang, 장),” such as doenjang (soy bean paste) or ganjang, and is served in a bansang (반상, regular meal table). The main ingredients for malgeun jangguk are meat, fish, vegetables, and seafoods. Gomguk, also called gomtang, refers to either a soup type made by boiling various beef parts such as rib, oxtail, brisket, head, and so forth for a long time, or made with ox bone by the same method. The broth of gomguk tends to have a milky color and to be rich and hearty taste. It can also be made with chicken or pork bone, to produce samgyetang or gamjatang.

Now we may continue.

Click image to enlarge. Ingredients and instructions.

Single packet which has a very strong garlic salt kind of odor to it.

Pre-boiling water.

Click image to enlarge. Wow this is great stuff! Decent for cup noodles and the broth is kind of like a rich and creamy beef broth with some nice veggies in it. This would go excellent outdoors in the colder season… 4.0 out of 5.0 stars! Get the kind that comes in a package here.

This guy very methodically makes some homemade Gomtang – good video.

Yep – another random Thanksgiving home movie from Youtube. I think the ones from the 60s 70s and 80s are much more entertaining…

The Ramen Rater News: Korea Yakult (Paldo) Will Be Exporting Kkokkomyeon Soon!

I’ve heard now from two separate sources that this Kkokkomyeon stuff is really popular and is going to be a really big deal when it comes to the USA. Both a seller of instant noodles alluded to it as well as a mention by name by the lady at the Kitty House at 99 Ranch Market (they sell Hello Kitty stuff there).

It has been named the business success of the year in Korea – beating out the iPad 2! Pretty amazing that noodles beat out Steve Jobs’ last hurrah.  Here are some articles about this stuff. Rest assured that as soon as I can get my mitts on some of these noodles, a very in-depth and detailed review will be found here.  Hey look!!! I just looked online and found you can get them off of Amazon – look here and here.

#658: Paldo Hwa King Cup Noodle Soup

Hey look! Mega-enormous Korean noodle bowl! Found this one at H Mart in Lynnwood, WA. Had the pack and the cup – now we’ll find out Hwa-ssup with this enormous King Cup! Yes we will. Yes.

Here’s all the info you could possibly want to know (click image to enlarge).

A single packet of powder seasoning – feels heavy.

Holy moly – yep, that’s a big mound of red, alien combating powder!

Finished (click image to enlarge); I let the noodles steep in the cup for two minutes and then stirred them and added an egg right smack in the middle and re-covered. Added some Ajishima Kimchi furikake, baby bok choy and a couple squirts of Texas Pete hot sauce. Noodles are pretty good – a little soft. The broth is the highlight here – red spicy heat! The veggies were here and there – decent amount. If you’re looking for a spicy noodle, this is the one, especially if you like Korean noodles. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. UPC barcode 648436100620 – here’s the pack version.

This is a really cool video – and this guy in the beginning is really relaxed.

This is kind of interesting.

#663: Paldo Jjajangmen (Blackbean Flavor)

Here’s one I’ve been meaning to get to and here we go! Thisd one is from Greg B. of Marathon, FL! Thanks Greg – let’s give this one a try!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Notice the noodles are prepared a little differently. Also notice the ingredients in that sauce [acket!

Here's the big noodle block - very wide noodles too.

This is a pretty good sized sauce packet!

Here's the back of it.

Finished (click image to enlarge). So what I did was I let the packet heat in the pot with the noodles. After they'd cooked, I drained the noodles and put everything in the pot, stirred a ton and put it all in the bowl. This is very different - I honestly did not expect to like this - but I most certainly do. The noodles are very thick and chewy and they get nicely coated in the black bean sauce. The sauce is very flavorful - I've had Jjangmen varieties before and the sauce was much ticker and more paste-like. This is truly a nice sauce - complete with veggies (those are what are on top). I was very pleasantly surprised. 4.0 out of 5.0 stars - delicious and satisfying. UPC barcode 648436100590 .

#674: Paldo (Korea Yakult) Kko Kko Myun

$

Here’s something extra special, sent by Chris H. of Westport, CT. This is the extremely popular Kko Kko Myun. What I know is that this is made using chicken broth instead of spicy red peppers. It is based on a recipe created by Korean comedian Lee Kyung-kyu. It has an unusual white broth – everything for the most part coming out of Korea has that bright red chili-infused broth. In the first five months of this stuff being released in Korea, they sold 100 million packs! Very popular! So here we go with a review – this is from Korea and not a regular export so the packaging doesn’t have all of its info, but hopefully you can glean info from the nutrition facts, etc off of the label.

There’s a picture of Lee Kyung-kyu on the back. If anyone could translate all of this, I’d be happy to include it! Click image to enlarge.

The noodle block! Big and solid.

Within is contained the chicken broth based powder seasoning – I’m very curious!

Oh wow – I didn’t expect this. So yesterday, my wife had to go to the hospital and I had a lot of time to spend in the lobby waiting for her to come out safe and sound. Well, I got some snacks – one being a bag of Munchies – Jalapeno flavor. Well, the munchies have various snacks all put together like a mix, one of them being Jalapeno Cheese Cheetos. Guess what? This stuff smells exactly the same. I tasted a tiny speck of it and sure enough – exactly the same! This isn’t a negative by any means; I like Jalapeno Cheetos quite a bit! Just a bit of a surprise.

Here’s the vegetable packet.

A decent amount of veggies in there – looks like a nice amount of green onions too – which I like very much.

Click image to enlarge. Here’s the finished product in it’s unmodified state. First, the noodles – standard and of very good quality for Paldo’s products. The broth: light in color and spicy – Jalapeno spicy! It works very well and is very different from anything Korean that I’ve ever had. The veggies are perfect for the dish and of a good quality. I like this a lot and I can see why those in Korea are going crazy over it. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars – excellent quality and flavor. UPC barcode 8801128509770 – get it here!

2012_7_18_top_001

* UPDATE * See here.

A couple of days ago, I received an email from a man who was angry. He was angry that the instant noodles he bought said that they were spicy Chicken flavor but weren’t spicy whatsoever and that I needed to change the seasonings ASAP. Every once in a while, I get a comment or email from someone who thinks that I make instant noodles or am affiliated with an instant noodle company. I decided to reply and do a review of the product he had problems with, adding some hot spices, sauces and peppers from around the world to really heat it up. It then occurred to me that a lot of people really like spicy instant noodles and that there’s really no list of the hottest ones out there. I figured I’d better do something about that, and so here’s the Top Ten Spiciest Instant Noodles Of All Time!

#10: Koka Instant Non-Fried Noodles Spicy Black Pepper Flavour – Singapore
If you like black pepper, you’ll want to try this. It has a nice peppery sauce that has a rich and deep black pepper flavor that doesn’t quit. The garnish of dried veggies are an added bonus. Original review

#9: Wei Lih Good Good Eat Super Ramen Hot Chili Flavor – Taiwan
Has decent noodles and a deep red broth that exclaims ‘beware of fire!’ The broth also has an oily texture and sweet notes that make it quite unique in its fire. Original review

#8: Paldo (Korea Yakult) Kko Kko Myun – South Korea
The result of a comedian on a competition TV show in South Korea, Kko Kko Myun has been a huge craze. The flavor is a jalapeno chicken – and the jalapeno is nice and strong. Has a real good bite to it. Original review

#7: FoodMon DJ-DOC Jjolmyeon – South Korea
DJ-Doc is a hip-hop group in South Korea and they must be pretty happy to have their faces on this stuff. In this bowl, you have noodles, large pieces which are rice cake and a red sauce which has a wonderful heat and flavor. It all ties together to be like a hot and spicy lasagna ala South Korea. Wonderful stuff! Original review

#6: JML Instant Noodle Artificial Spicy Hot Beef Flavour – China
A very spicy Chinese noodle soup. Notice its not spicy beef, it’s spicy hot beef! Has decent veggies and a serious punch! Original review

#5: Nongshim Shin Ramyun Noodle Soup – USA

#3: Nongshim Jinjja Jinjja (Really Really) Ramyun – South Korea
This is hot and unique. Based on pork broth and has some niceties like black sesame seeds and peanut powder. Has a strong heat but it’s got some really great taste to it – this is awesome stuff! Original review

#2: Indomie Curly Noodle With Chicken & Chilli Paddi – Indonesia
Sweet mother – this is intense! That little pepper (also known as a Bird’s Eye pepper) was enough to burn my lips, mouth and gut for a good long time! Heavy duty! I should also mention there’s a place that sells spicy noodles in Jakarta that has 75 to 100 of these peppers mixed in – Imagination fails me as to the scorching pain! Original review

#1: Paldo Teumsae Instant Noodles With Soup – South Korea
Hands down, bar non, this is the hottest stuff I’ve had. In over 800 varieties I’ve tried, this is the very hottest. From the first slurp to the end of the bowl, my mouth was on fire. If you are a big fan of all that is spicy, this is what you are looking for. Original review

PALDO> 3 Noodles were introduced in September 1983. 1. Sooeh-gogi(Beef) 2. Chlorella, 3. Sesame Flavor

TRR> I hear Paldo pronounced with an ‘i’ instead of an ‘l’ in Korean commercials – is this the correct way to
say the company name?

PALDO>I think the pronunciation “L” in Korean differs from English Pronunciation that makes little different and it sound a bit like “paido” for you. But, it is really Pal-Do with” L”

TRR> How does the process in which you make your noodles differ from other brands?

PALDO> 4 Major Korean Noodle making company’s Facilities and processes may be very similar to each other. If we were to bring out what Paldo is really different from others is that we have tried more to come out with better products. For instance, we came up with liquid soup mix NOT dry, we built facilities to make Retort processed products, we spent more time to develop our products and these make a major different from others. As a result, for the first time in the history, we have applied this liquid mix to Bibim men, and Jjajangmen’s Retort processed technology would be our valuable outcome from our longtime effort.

TRR> When you make instant noodles for yoursself, do you add anything or have any recommendations?

PALDO> In Korea, there is a very special soup that increase energy, boost metabolism, promote fitness, made out with Chicken, Ginseng, jujube, sticky rice, and Whole Garlics in a pot. We call this “Sam-Gye-Tang”. As a special recommendation, you can start with our soup mix, a strip of ginseng, some jujube, and garlics. Boil these for about 20 min (recommend to put a little more water than recommended) and put your noodle and cook this with your toppings if you like. This recommendation will be the most Healthier and wellbeing Ramen Cooking for you.
We do not have any other recommendations than this, but if we really have to recommend, we recommend the instructions in the back of our noodle packs. Especially, adding water portion could make a big difference. Cooking equipment and time also makes difference, but when you cook our new product, we recommend not adding anything because we want you to taste our original taste provided.

I got a couple of large boxes from the folks at Paldo America today! Wonder what’s inside?

Samples to review! Some new ones, some that I’ve already reviewed too. Really looking forward to a week of Korean noodles! Yum!

I think this is a hint! Okay I’ll try using chopsticks again!

I’ve never seen anything like this – it’s a USB drive built into a card! Thanks! Now I can have a backup of all my noodle stuff in my wallet!

Speaking of wallets, they sent me a Paldo card wallet! What’s great about this is that my business cards are usually too tall to fit in my wallet so this is perfect!

They sent some baseball related items too – it looks like Paldo is the big sponsor of South Korea’s Korean Baseball Organization! This is a giant baseball on a little wooden stand! Very cool!

A big sticker!

They also sent a couple ball caps – the one on the left is from the SK Wyverns and the right is the LG Twins.

Finally, this interesting little guy. Not exactly sure what he is though! It’s made of a heavy rubber – my wife thinks it is to hold down the lid of cup noodles. I think he’ll do splendidly at this task! *I was told by Moses that it’s actually an enormous pencil eraser!

Thanks go to Moses and all at Paldo for these nice items and great products to review!

I asked my wife Kit to pick which pack of noodles to begin Meet The Manufacturer: Paldo week and she picked this one. Sounds like a great place to start!

Back of the packaging (click image to enlarge).

That’s one big noodle block!

Powder seasoning.

Bring on the flavor!

Veggie packet.

Nice looking little bits.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added some veggies, odeng, Fresno peppers, kimchi, a slice of processed cheese and some Sunchang Gochujang. The noodles are really great – nice and thick – and plentiful. The broth has a great balance of soy flavor and heat. The veggies weren’t bad but wish there were more. All in all, quite good. 4.25 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 8801128504737 .

Hey look – noodles and baseball! Deinifitely a winning combo!

I’m not exactly sure, but it looks like a huge food drive in Korea?

Wow check this out! Paldo sent me this prototype of a new product – a bowl of instant noodles that only takes a minute and thirty seconds to cook. Pretty amazing – but how does it taste?

Cover detail (click image to enlarge).

Looks like a normal noodle block. Maybe a thinner gauge noodle though?

The seasoning packet.

The seasoning powder.

A little melange of veggies at the bottom of the bowl.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Here it is in its natural state. I tasted it before I put it in the nioce looking bowl right after I stirred it at a minute thirty. The noodles are most definitely of a thinner gauge than their usual packet varieties. They;’re light and fluffy. The broth has a slightly spicy beef flavor to it. The veggies did really quite well and were of a decent quantity for this bowl. All in all, I wasn’t expecting this to be anything earth-shaking. I was more curious whether is would be horrible. I must say that it was pretty decent as far as a quick fix snack goes. I could see dropping sdome beef and more veggies in and it being a little fuller, but that’s not what this bowl is going for. Quick and easy to prepare for sure. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars – good show! UPC bar code 8801128509954 .

Paldo King Bowl Commercial

This is absolutely crummy – would love to see a USA vs Korea game!

Finally after a long wait, Kkokkomyun has come to the United States as Kokomen! This is the instant that brought about the whole ‘white broth’ craze in Korea. Here’s an excerpt from my interview with Paldo:

TRR> After a very long wait, Kokomen has just been released in the United States. Could you tell us about Kokomen and how it came into existence and what makes it special?

PALDO> Usually New Ramen comes out from existing similar types. For instance, Jjajang, Jjambbong, Yuk-gye-jang, Cold Noodle, Kissmyon, Nagasaki Jjambbong Etc. But, Kokomen is very unique and prototype of all recipes. Kokomen was introduced through a Cooking Contest and food critics and people were amazed by the taste of it. Paldo took this recipe and developed to a total brand new product to our consumers.

I reviewed the Korean version in the past and now, here’s the US version. I should also mention is nabbed 8th place in my Top Ten Spiciest Instant Noodles Of All Time recently!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge).

The big noodle block.

The seasoning packet.

Lots of tasty powder!

The veggie packet.

Lots of veggie here – a definite plus!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added some over baked chicken I made with Jane’s Krazy Mixed Up Salt.  The noodles are plump and plentiful – they have a very nice texture. The broth is awesome – has a strong jalapeno flavor as well as a great chicken taste. The veggies are of a nice quantity and are really quite tasty! These components come together to create an original and extremely tasty noodle soup which I am happy to again give 5.0 out of 5.0 stars – excellent! I recommend it. UPC bar code 648436100682.

#824: Meet The Manufacturer: Paldo Cucumber Bibim Men

Here’s something different – Cucumber Bibim Men! Bibimbap is a common Korean dish involving a sauce with mixed vegetables and rice. The ‘Men’ here is pronounced ‘main’ as in chow mein as in noodles. So what this is is a cold noodle deal – you boil the noodles and veggies, drain and rinse with cold water a few times, add the liquid packet and stir it together. Curious if I’m going to like this – I’ve had Bibim Men a long time ago, but my tastes have changed so we’ll see.

Here’s the back of the packaging (click image to enlarge).

The noodle block.

The vegetable packet.

Bits of cucumber?

The liquid packet.

Lots of liquid here and has a strong cucumber scent.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added some hard boiled egg with Krazy Mixed Up Salt, and some oven baked chicken with a little Dua Belibis chili sauce. I can say that I am very happily surprised. Good gauge on the noodles as usual from Paldo. The flavoring that coats it all is delicious – spicy and full of cucumber flavor. Finally, the vegetables – pieces of cucumber that rehydrated quite nicely – and they’re crunchy! I am also happy to report that this is really great cold. I’m sold – another winner here! 5.0 out of 5.0 stars! UPC bar code 8809296881223 .

This product is one that Paldo makes for sale in Japan. Shoyu (soy sauce) is a very traditional Japanese style of ramen.

Side panels (click image to enlarge).

The noodle block and vegetables.

Seasoning packet.

A nice scent of soy!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Noodles are pretty good for a cup – thin but decent. The broth has a very nice soy taste to it. The vegetables re-hydrated decently. Pretty good stuff! 3.25 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 4935816888886 .

Re-Review: Meet The Manufacturer: Paldo Gomtang Oriental Style Noodles With Soup Base

How often do you see Korean instant noodles that aren’t spicy? Well, here’s one of those rare times. Pronounced Gohm-tahng (thanks Moses from Paldo America!), this is a traditional beef noodle soup.

Package back (click image to enlarge).

Noodle block broke in half – no worries!

A single packet – no veggies in this one.

Lots of seasoning powder. It has a strong sweet and garlic scent that I found very enticing.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added some roast beef lunch meat and a little Krazy Mixed Up Salt. This was great! The noodles are a little different – I noticed they include a little rice powder in the mix and I think that’s why they have a slightly chewier texture. I also noticed as the noodles cooked, the broth was getting a creamy white color. The broth is wonderful. The flavor is a sweet, beefy and garlicky melange that is very pleasing. This isn’t a spicy one either. Very good – 4.75 out of 5.0 stars! Delicious! UPC bar code 648436100149 – get it here.
